OPECAM Field Unit

OPECAM Field Unit

The Field Operations Unit (OPECAM) was set up to provide support to the many research activities in the natural environment carried out by the ICMAN that required field trips to obtain samples in the various different compartments of the environment – water, atmosphere, sediments and biota. The Unit currently comprises two technicians who are specialized in the work of taking samples, sub-aqua activities, sailing and handling of instruments. Given the high degree of specialization of the personnel, the activities carried out by the OPECAM unit are critical for the performance of many of the research projects undertaken not only by the ICMAN but also by other CSIC institutes and collaborating universities.

THE MORE SIGNIFICANT AMONG THE ACTIVITIES OF THE UNIT ARE:

  • Collection of biological samples (plankton, crustaceans, fishes, bivalves, cnidarians, etc.) along the maritime coastal strip.
  • Underwater activities for sample collection and the installation of sub-aquatic equipment (e.g. current meters, sediment traps, etc.)
  • Handling of vessels.
  • Technical assistance with activities of physical nature (e.g. CTD, hydrographic parameters, etc.), chemical (e.g. sampling of nutrients and trace metals in the water column) and biological (e.g. fishing for plankton and fish), onboard ship during oceanographic campaigns.
  • Manipulation and treatment of samples, and technical support in the laboratory.
